Bushakra met her future husband, a native of Lebanon, in 1923 while studying at the University of Seville in Spain. They both returned to New York after their studies, where they married and lived for 12 years. In 1937 she left her home and a successful career to accompany her husband to Lebanon where she spent the remainder of her life. She and her husband built their home, ''"Eagle's Eyrie''," on an isolated mountaintop.
